Few American warships are as easy to recognize in profile as the frigate *Constitution*, shown here from the side while moored at a dock. Launched in Boston in 1797, she earned the nickname "Old Ironsides" during the War of 1812, when her oak hull held up against British cannon fire. The caption card gives no date, and its details are unverified, but the print belongs to a Civil War-era collection. During that conflict the ship spent much of its time as a training vessel at Annapolis rather than in combat.
