This item is an artist's conception of USS Constitution in port with her sails fully set, an imagined view of the frigate rather than a photograph of the ship itself. Launched in Boston in 1797, she earned the nickname "Old Ironsides" during the War of 1812, when her oak hull reportedly shrugged off British cannonballs in her fight with HMS Guerriere. Around 1933, when this drawing was made, the ship was undergoing a major restoration, and renewed public interest in her history helped make her a lasting national symbol.
