This drawing shows the commodore's quarters aboard the frigate Constitution, the aft cabins where a squadron commander lived and worked at sea. Launched in 1797 at Boston's North End and commissioned the following year, the ship earned the nickname "Old Ironsides" after its victories over British warships in the War of 1812. Today it is berthed at the Charlestown Navy Yard, part of Boston National Historical Park. Plans like this one show how a wooden warship organized its limited space around rank and command.
