Docked at the Charlestown Navy Yard in Boston, the frigate *Constitution* was already nearly 140 years old when this photograph was taken around July 1933. Launched in 1797 at a North End shipyard, the ship earned the nickname "Old Ironsides" during the War of 1812, when its hull shrugged off enemy cannon fire. By the 1830s it faced scrapping until Oliver Wendell Holmes's poem rallied public support to save it. The Depression-era photograph reflects that enduring public affection, and the ship's continued presence in Boston is a reminder of its role as a national symbol.
