Titled "Richmond has fallen - The Bubble Burst," this 1865 engraving treats the loss of the Confederate capital as a bubble popping, a mocking image of the Southern cause collapsing. Richmond, Virginia, had served as the Confederate capital since 1861, and Union forces occupied it in early April 1865, shortly before Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House. The print was engraved and drawn by H.F. Greene and is catalogued among Civil War sheet music covers, a reminder of how wartime publishers used satirical imagery to celebrate Union victories.
