Richmond Kelly Turner's first name is the only link to the Richmond on this board, since the subject was a United States Navy admiral, not a place. This bust portrait, dated February 21, 1945, shows him in profile facing left, at a moment when the Pacific war was at its height. Turner was directing amphibious operations in the Pacific that winter, including the invasion of Iwo Jima, which began two days before this picture was taken. He was known for a blunt, demanding manner that earned him the nickname "Terrible Turner," and the portrait captures the controlled, serious bearing of a senior wartime commander.
