This portrait shows the sculptor Richmond Barthé, shown from roughly the knees up and turned slightly to the right. The "Richmond" on the gallery board comes from his first name, not the Virginia city. Barthé, born in 1901 in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, became known in the 1930s for figurative sculpture of Black subjects, and he was a notable figure in the New York art scene of that era. The caption card does not record a date, so the sitting itself is best understood as a portrait of an artist at the height of his career.
