The Chickahominy River, named in this drawing's subject headings, ran through swampy ground east of Richmond, where Union forces under George McClellan were camped in mid-1862. The sheet records the everyday work of that moment: a bridge under construction, a railroad, guards, uniformed soldiers, and a cemetery. It was likely made just after the Seven Days' Battles, when the army was repairing its crossings and burying its dead. Drawings like this one, done in pencil and white paint on tan paper, offer a quieter view of the Peninsula Campaign than the battle scenes more often reproduced.
