A sculpture called *Mother & Son* anchors this view of Richmond, its figures set against the streets and grounds around them. The subject follows a long tradition in Western art, from medieval Madonna and Child carvings to the figurative bronzes and stone groups that cities placed in parks and squares during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Photographs of such works were often made to document public art for civic records and for people who would never see them in person. Notice how the photographer positions the figures within the setting, which suggests how passersby were meant to encounter the piece.
