Few photographs from the Washington Navy Yard show a gun system on wheels, but this one pairs a tractor mount with a limber, the two-wheeled front cart that hitches to a field gun and carries part of its weight. The Naval Gun Factory at the Navy Yard produced ordnance and mounts for the fleet, and the record dates the image to about 1917, when the United States was entering the First World War. Wartime demand pushed engineers to replace horses with motor power for hauling heavy artillery, and tractor technology was adapted to that job. The picture is a useful glimpse of the point where farm machinery and military logistics began to overlap.
