Ford's tractor exhibits at Washington, D.C. shows in the 1920s drew crowds of farmers, dealers and city visitors eager to see the machines that were beginning to replace horses on American farms. This National Photo Company view records one of those displays set up under show tents, a reminder of how the Ford Motor Company used public exhibitions to promote its Fordson tractor, introduced in 1917, at a time when mechanized farming was still gaining ground. The National Photo Company, a Washington firm that photographed events and street scenes throughout the city, left behind a large body of images like this one, which now help historians reconstruct the period's commercial and agricultural life.
