A Ford tractor demonstration, dated around 1921 on this glass negative, shows the machine being put in front of farmers as a practical alternative to horses. The Fordson, which Ford's company began building in 1917, was sold on cheap, dependable power for plowing and hauling, and demonstrations like this one helped win over buyers. The negative comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., commercial studio whose work documents much of the period's daily life, though the title is the studio's own and has not been independently verified. Streaks and blemishes across the glass reflect the natural deterioration of its original coatings over the decades since it was made.
