Around 1921, a Ford tractor was the subject of this glass negative, a record of a machine that was changing farm work in the years after World War I. Ford's Fordson tractor, introduced in 1917, was built to be cheap and easy to mass-produce, and demonstrations like this one helped manufacturers show skeptical farmers what a gasoline-powered tractor could pull and plow. The National Photo Company, based in Washington, D.C., made the image as part of its broad documentary work in the early twentieth century. Look closely at the streaks and blemishes on the glass, which come from the natural deterioration of the original coating rather than from the scene itself.
