The text of the 1872 act that set aside land near the headwaters of the Yellowstone River as a public park is the document itself, not a view of the landscape. President Ulysses S. Grant signed it on March 1, 1872, creating the first national park in the world. Its passage owed a great deal to the 1871 Hayden Geological Survey, whose photographs by William Henry Jackson and paintings by Thomas Moran helped convince Congress that the region's geysers and canyons deserved protection. The board's pairing of the act with those two artists shows how legal language and visual evidence worked together.
