The manuscript of the act approved on March 1, 1872, sets aside the Yellowstone region of Wyoming and Montana territories as a public park "for the benefit and enjoyment of the people," creating the first national park in the United States. Congress took up the bill after the 1870 Washburn-Langford-Doane expedition and reports from the Hayden Survey, whose photographs by William Henry Jackson and paintings by Thomas Moran helped persuade lawmakers that the landscape was worth protecting. The legislative signatures on the sheet mark the formal passage of a law that became a model for protected lands around the world.
