Lima, Ohio, was a manufacturing and oil town in 1913, its economy built on the oil field discovered in the region in the 1880s and on railroad-related shops. That March, a week of heavy rain sent rivers across Ohio over their banks, and the Great Flood of 1913 struck many communities hard, with Dayton the best known of them. Lima's low-lying neighborhoods along the Ottawa River were inundated, and residents cut off by the water had to wait for boats and temporary crossings to reach dry ground. This photograph records the flood district as it looked while the water was still high, a scene local people would have remembered for years as the worst the town had seen.
