Dayton, Ohio, was a manufacturing city of the Miami Valley in 1913, home to the National Cash Register Company and a range of factories, mills, and railroad yards. In late March of that year, days of heavy rain and melting snow sent the Miami, Stillwater, and Mad rivers over their banks, and water poured into the downtown streets and the low neighborhoods along the rivers. Many people were drowned or killed by debris, and the damage to homes, businesses, and factories was severe. The disaster led the city and surrounding communities to plan a regional flood control system of dams, levees, and channels, which became the Miami Conservancy District. This photograph shows the flooded city as residents would have known it that spring.
