The S.S. Sierra was one of the steamers of the Oceanic Steamship Company, a line founded by the Spreckels family that carried passengers and freight between San Francisco and Hawaii and on to Australia. This view is a large-format glass negative, roughly 11 by 14 inches, made around 1900 by the Detroit Publishing Company, which sold travel views of cities, scenery and ships across the country. Negatives of this size were used to make high-quality prints, and the ship's hull and rigging offer a clear record of the steel passenger liners that linked the Pacific islands to the mainland.
