The print's record singles out the torpedo boat *Cushing*, named for Lieutenant William B. Cushing, who sank the Confederate ironclad *Albemarle* in a daring night raid in 1864. The picture groups the squadron's ships in a clockwise arrangement, with the gunboat *Concord* placed in the upper left. The White Squadron, the nickname for the Squadron of Evolution, was the first sizable group of steel-hulled, modern warships of the new American navy, and its white paint gave it the name. Photographers of the Detroit Publishing Company, which issued this view around 1891, sold such scenes to a public eager to see the country's growing fleet.
