Water pouring through the streets of Melville, Louisiana, marks this print as a record of a levee break, or crevasse, rather than a general view of high water. It comes from an album of photographs documenting the high water of 1927 on the Mississippi River and its tributaries, the most destructive flood in the river's modern history. Breaks in the levees sent water across farmland and into small towns across the lower valley, forcing many residents to leave their homes for weeks or months. The gelatin silver print is stamped by Ewing, Inc., a Baton Rouge studio, which helps place its origin in Louisiana.
