A commercial street in an unidentified town, with automobiles lined up at the curb, is the detail that anchors this print to the early twentieth century. The record dates it only to the 1910s or 1920s ("191-?"), but the parked cars themselves are useful evidence: by that period motor vehicles were moving from novelty to everyday fixture on Main Streets across the country, and storefronts were being reshaped to serve them. Because the town is not named, the picture works less as a record of one place than as a glimpse of how American commercial districts looked as automobile traffic was changing them.
