Few of the pictures in Roger Fenton's Crimean series show a single working man at his post, which sets this portrait of Mr. Angel, identified as a postmaster, apart. Fenton spent several months in the Crimea in 1855, photographing the British army's camps, officers, and supply lines for an audience back home. The Army's postal service was a vital link between soldiers and their families, so a postmaster was a familiar and necessary figure in the camps. This salted paper print was made from a paper negative, a process that gave the images their soft, warm tones and fine texture.
