Few hats of the 1890s carried a name as specific as the Gainsborough, and this platinum print shows Ethel Reed wearing one in the style named for the painter Thomas Gainsborough. Its broad brim and billowing plumes echo the 18th-century English portraits he made, a look that fashion revived repeatedly during the decade. Photographers of the period often chose platinum printing for its soft tonal range and matte surface, qualities well suited to the texture of feathers and fabric here. The print, dated between 1895 and 1898, came to the Library of Congress in 1934 as part of the Louise Imogen Guiney Collection, a gift made anonymously.
