Titled "The modern Samson," this photogravure takes its name from the biblical strongman who pulled down a temple on his enemies, a pointed image for a figure of great economic might. It was published in 1906 in John Ames Mitchell's *The Silent War*, a book issued by the Life Publishing Company, the New York humor weekly. William Balfour Ker's illustration belongs to a wave of early twentieth-century satire that turned its attention to business power, labor and the unequal bargaining between them. The picture's subjects, listed in the record as business people, the working class and exploitation, show how the artist framed those tensions for an audience of middle-class readers.
