Pinnacle Rock, a tall granite formation in the Yosemite region, is the subject of this 1875 stereograph, issued as No. 7376 in the American Views series. William Isaac Marshall, a California publisher, produced many such cards of Yosemite during the 1870s, when the valley was drawing growing numbers of visitors and its scenery was becoming famous across the country. Stereocards like this were meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which fused two slightly different photographs into a single image with depth. Albumen prints of this era have a warm, brownish tone, and the pairing of a dramatic rock face with the card's careful composition shows how these views shaped popular images of the West.
