The tunnel cuts straight through solid granite, with a paved parking area set beside the road where drivers can stop. Roads like this one were carved into Yosemite's steep walls in the early twentieth century, when automobiles were first bringing large numbers of visitors into the valley. Tunnels such as this let the road hold a steady grade and avoid long detours around cliffs. Notice how the rough, unfinished rock of the opening contrasts with the smooth pavement and the open sky beyond.
