The Wawona Tunnel is one of the few places in Yosemite where a road was cut straight through solid granite, and this view records the work of building it. The tunnel carries the Wawona Road past the rock face on its way toward the valley floor, and its eastern exit is where travelers first get the wide view of Yosemite Valley that has made the spot famous. Construction in the early 1930s had to contend with steep terrain and hard rock, all done with hand tools, drills and blasting. Images like this one show how much effort went into a route that now feels effortless.
