Few places in the American West have been photographed as often as Yosemite Valley, and this view pulls the eye down to a parking lot sitting on the valley floor, with sheer granite walls rising behind it. The contrast is the point: a spot built for cars and visitors set against some of the oldest-looking rock in the Sierra Nevada. Glacier-carved cliffs like these, including El Capitan and Half Dome, drew tourists to the valley from the late 1800s onward, and Yosemite became a national park in 1890. Seen this way, the scene records how the valley shifted from wilderness destination to managed park, with the modern car park taking its place among the landmarks.
