Register Rock in Yosemite Valley is the subject here, a spot where early visitors signed their names in the granite near the valley floor. This stereograph card, issued in 1879, comes from Carleton Watkins's New Series of Pacific Coast Views, with the publishing credit going to William I. Marshall, who sold these cards to tourists and armchair travelers alike. Pairs of images like this one, viewed through a stereoscope, gave viewers a convincing sense of depth and made Yosemite's landmarks familiar across the country.
