Number 73 in Marshall's *Glories of the Yosemite* series, this 1875 card holds a pair of albumen prints meant to be viewed through a hand-held stereoscope, which fused the two slightly offset images into one three-dimensional scene. William I. Marshall, who lived from 1840 to 1906, published the series, and cards like this carried the valley's scenery into parlors at a time when few Americans could make the trip themselves. California had set Yosemite Valley aside in 1864, and it did not become a national park until 1890, so stereoviews like this one helped shape how the public pictured the place well before it was widely visited.
