Inspiration Point, a lookout on the trail rim above Yosemite Valley, gives this stereograph its vantage: the viewer stands high and looks down the length of the valley floor. The card belongs to Carleton Watkins's New Series of Pacific Coast Views, issued in the late 1870s, and it carries the negative number 3093. Watkins was among the first photographers to document Yosemite in detail, and his large-format work helped shape how Americans pictured the valley as a national wonder. Stereo cards like this one were sold to parlors and read through hand viewers, so the pairing of two slightly offset images gave the landscape a sense of depth.
