Taken in New York on November 4, 1934, this portrait shows Gertrude Stein during her first extended return to the United States in more than three decades, a lecture tour that drew large crowds across the country. Carl Van Vechten, the novelist and critic who championed her writing and was one of her closest American friends, photographed her many times, and his sittings remain among the best-known images of her. The print belongs to his celebrity portraits, which the Library of Congress received from his estate in 1966.
