Taken in New York on November 4, 1934, this portrait shows Gertrude Stein during her return to the United States after many years in Paris, where she had become a central figure in the modernist circle. The photographer, Carl Van Vechten, was a close friend and a champion of her writing, and he photographed her many times over the years. The sitting came at a time when her American visit drew wide public attention. The print is part of Van Vechten's celebrity portrait series at the Library of Congress.
