Taken around 1915, this view of Roosevelt Dam on the Salt River pairs the massive masonry wall with a fishing scene, a detail that suggests the reservoir behind it was already drawing visitors for recreation as well as serving as a water supply. Phoenix photographer E.E. Kunselman, who registered the image for copyright, made it only a few years after President Theodore Roosevelt dedicated the dam in 1911. Built to store water for irrigation in the Salt River Valley, the dam was among the largest masonry structures of its day, and the photograph shows how the project's lake had become a place for people to spend leisure time.
