Roosevelt Dam, on the Salt River northeast of Phoenix, was named for President Theodore Roosevelt and was built under the Reclamation Service between 1903 and 1911. When this photograph was taken around 1915, the dam was complete and its masonry wall was holding back the reservoir that became Roosevelt Lake, which helped make irrigated farming possible across the Salt River Valley. The print was registered for copyright by E. E. Kunselman, whose work documented the dam and the wider reclamation projects of the Southwest in the early twentieth century.
