Chickamauga, Georgia, in 1898 was best known to its neighbors as the site of the 1863 Civil War battle and the national military park established there in 1890. That summer the surrounding ground filled with volunteer regiments raised for the Spanish-American War, which had begun in April, and the camp near the battlefield, known as Camp George H. Thomas, held a large share of the men called up across the South and Midwest. Crowded tents, poor drainage, and contaminated water left many soldiers ill, and typhoid fever and dysentery caused far more deaths in the camps than combat did in the war. Local residents and railroad men in nearby Chattanooga saw the trains, supply wagons, and drilling companies arrive that year, and the camps remained a pressing public concern until the troops were moved out in the fall.
