Few views in David Roberts's Holy Land series carry as much weight as this one of the principal court of the convent of St. Catherine, the Greek Orthodox monastery at the foot of Mount Sinai in the Sinai Peninsula. The monastery, traditionally built around the site where Moses is said to have seen the burning bush, was among the most remote and fortified religious houses in the region, and its enclosed courtyard offered Roberts a rare look at a space few European travelers had been able to enter. Louis Haghe's color lithograph, issued in London by F. G. Moon in parts between 1842 and 1845, turns Roberts's sketch into a carefully layered scene of stone walls and monastic life. The print was made for the published volumes of The Holy Land, where it helped fuel a European appetite for accurate pictures of biblical places.
