The Tombs, the city jail on center Street in lower Manhattan, takes its nickname from its heavy, Egyptian-style facade. Completed in 1838 to a design by John Haviland, the architect of Philadelphia's Eastern State Penitentiary, it held people awaiting trial and became known over the following decades for overcrowding and harsh conditions. This c1905 view comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers produced views of American cities and landmarks for sale to the public, so the picture records how the building looked to the visitors and residents of its day.
