Overhead tracks and steel trestles define this view, with the elevated railway towering above the street below. New York's elevated lines dated to the late 1860s, beginning on Greenwich Street, and by the early 1900s they ran along several Manhattan avenues, carrying heavy passenger traffic above crowded sidewalks. The structures cast deep shadows and brought noise and cinders to the streets beneath them, which fueled long debates about light, safety and the city's growth. The Detroit Publishing Company recorded scenes like this as part of its broad catalog of American views made around 1900.
