Alfred Jones stands in this three-quarter length portrait, a half-plate daguerreotype that was later cut down to a smaller size. The plate sits in a plain brown leather case, and a scratched inscription on its back reads "C. H. Davis, U.S. 72," a marking whose meaning the record does not explain. Dating from between 1840 and 1860, when daguerreotypes were the leading form of portrait photography in America, it shows how sitters of the period presented themselves in formal, carefully held poses. The Library of Congress acquired it in 1997 from the Marian S. Carson collection.
