Few daguerreotypes survive with as much paperwork as this three-quarter length portrait of Charles M. Norton of Hightstown, New Jersey. The brass mat is stamped Meade & Bro., and the velvet lining is embossed with the Meade Brothers' Daguerreotype Galleries at 233 Broadway in New York, a studio active in the city during the 1850s. The sixth-plate image has been hand-colored, and the inscription on the back, a note of friendship, adds a personal touch. The piece is part of the Clara Barton Papers at the Library of Congress.
