A handwritten note on the back of this sixth-plate daguerreotype identifies the sitter as Edward James Roye, senator from Montserrado County, Liberia. Roye emigrated to Liberia in the 1840s and later served as the country's president, a term cut short by his death in 1871. The plate is part of the American Colonization Society records, the organization founded in 1817 to resettle Black Americans in Liberia. The photographer is unidentified, but the portrait, dated between 1856 and 1860, reflects the studio conventions of the period, including the formal standing pose and the careful presentation of a public official.
