The ferry named on this plate, the Highlander, is what sets it apart, and the record places it probably in the Hudson Highlands, where the river cuts through steep mountains north of New York City. Ferries and their wharves were a working link in the region's travel before the Bear Mountain Bridge opened in 1924, carrying passengers and freight between shorelines that rail and road connections often left far apart. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative between about 1895 and 1910, sold views of such scenes to railroads and travel promoters, so the picture was likely meant to advertise the river as much as to document it.
