Two of Theodore Roosevelt's younger sons, Archie and Kermit, appear here as the subjects of a glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. The Bain News Service, a Manhattan photo agency that supplied newspapers with pictures from the early 1900s, labeled the plate with their names, though the record notes that the identification is unverified and the date is unknown. Archie was born in 1894 and Kermit in 1889, so the brothers were young men by the time of the White House years, when the family drew steady press attention. The Bain negatives are valued today as a record of how news photographs of public figures were made and circulated before halftone printing became routine.
