Edith Kermit Roosevelt, wife of President Theodore Roosevelt, sits for this 1902 portrait with her son Quentin, the youngest of the family's children, who was about five at the time. The photograph comes from the Frances Benjamin Johnston Collection, which documents the White House years and the families who lived there. Johnston, one of the most accomplished women photographers of her day, was given wide access to the Roosevelt household, and her pictures of the first lady and children helped shape the public image of a presidential family that lived in the White House with considerable energy and noise.
