Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt was the second wife of Theodore Roosevelt, whom she had known since childhood, and she became First Lady when he took office in 1901 after the assassination of William McKinley. This 1902 portrait comes from the Frances Benjamin Johnston Collection, which Johnston assembled as she photographed the presidents and their wives over several decades. Johnston was one of the most prominent women photographers of her day, and her sitters were often shown in carefully composed formal poses. The picture is a useful record of how the White House presented its first lady in the early years of the Roosevelt administration.
