Archie Roosevelt, the youngest of Theodore Roosevelt's sons, appears here as a small boy in a studio portrait made by Pach Brothers of New York. The picture survives as a glass negative in the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress, which holds the work of the Bain News Service, a photo agency that distributed pictures of news figures and public life in the early twentieth century. Archie was born in 1894 while his father was serving as New York's police commissioner, and he grew up largely in the White House after 1901. Studio portraits like this one were a common way for prominent families to share images of their children with the press and the public.
