A young Theodore Roosevelt Jr., the eldest son of the president, appears in this cameo portrait, a style that fades the head and shoulders into an open background. The studio, Pach Bros. of New York, was known for its portraits of prominent sitters, and the picture dates to 1906, when Roosevelt was in his late teens and a student at Harvard. Images like this one moved through the Bain News Service, a picture agency that supplied newspapers, which is how the glass negative came to be preserved at the Library of Congress. The title comes from caption data that has not been verified, so details should be checked against other sources.
