Archie Roosevelt, one of President Theodore Roosevelt's sons, appears here with Nicholas Roosevelt in a sepia-toned photograph taken at Oyster Bay on Long Island, where the family kept its Sagamore Hill home. Dated around 1904, the picture shows the two boys at play, an informal glimpse of childhood at the house the president called home. Edward S. Curtis, better known for his portraits of Native American peoples, holds the copyright, a reminder that his work reached well beyond that subject. The details come from old caption cards and remain partly unverified, so the exact date deserves some caution.
