Archibald Bulloch Roosevelt, born in 1894, was the second son of President Theodore Roosevelt and was about nine years old when this portrait was made around 1903. He is shown on horseback, a pastime that the Roosevelt children pursued enthusiastically at the White House and at Sagamore Hill, the family home on Long Island. The print is attributed to G.W. Pach, a New York photographer who worked in the early twentieth century, and it was registered for copyright, a common step for pictures of this kind. Images of the president's children riding ponies were widely circulated and help document the active, outdoor childhood the Roosevelts cultivated in public view.
